Mittenwald

The town of Mittenwald is a 15-minute drive away from Seefeld, just at the foot of the Karwendel mountains. As the first stop after crossing the border to Bavaria, the historic town boasts a picturesque town centre, possibly the only one of its kind. The historic paintings on many houses of the pedestrian zone, the Catholic Parish Church of St Paul, which was built in 1740, and the violin-making museum are the highlights to be discovered in the village. Many shops selling local handicrafts invite you to browse, and typical Bavarian inns serve original veal sausages with sweet mustard – best known from the famous Oktoberfest in Munich.

Its location on the border, directly on the ancient Roman road, made the village a lively trading post. Relics from Roman times still tell tale of the Via Raetia, which led via Seefeld and the Brenner Pass all the way to Rome. During the Bozner market, which takes place every 5 years, Mittenwald is once again immersed in the flair of the Middle Ages.

In the surroundings of Mittenwald, our guests will also find numerous hiking tours and attractions. We recommend a bike ride or hike to Lake Lautersee and Lake Ferchensee, and fantastic views are guaranteed at the mountain station of the Karwendelbahn cable car.

The Ghost Valley in Leutasch

Ghosts, goblins, and demons: The Ghost Valley is one of the most impressive sights to see in Seefeld.

Our guests will discover a breathtaking and memorable experience in Leutaschtal: at the “Geisterklamm”, or Ghost Valley, you go on a spooky and mythical trail – into the world of the Valley Ghost, which has lived there between the rocks and caves for many centuries.

The 3km-long Ghost Walk leads through the gorge with its flowing streams. You can go on an 800m-long climb and walk right past the rocks, with various points where the legend of the Valley Ghost is told in detail. The ghost rose up from the mountains some time ago and found its home in this distant gorge where it has hidden itself away from people ever since. It has only been seen occasionally in Mittenwald in the summer, as it was on its way back to its kingdom of demons, goblins, and dwarves. The trail ends at a 23-metre-high waterfall just before Mittenwald, a round walk on the so-called Goblin Path returns to the starting point in Leutasch.

Please note: The Ghost Valley is only accessible on foot; the platforms are not suitable for small children or dogs. In addition, you should not be afraid of heights and of course, be prepared – in case you encounter the ghost …

Ganghofer Museum in Leutasch

The Ganghofer Museum in Leutasch is perfect for all who are interested in the history of Seefeld: Ludwig Ganghofer (1855 – 1920) was one of the most important German-language poets, novelists and writers of his time and lived for about 20 years in a romantic hunting lodge in Gaistal. Here, Ganghofer indulged his passion for hunting and wrote works such as “The silence of the forest”, which was also made into a film.

The Ganghofer Museum exhibits numerous collectibles and relics of his time and provides insight into the history of the village of Leutasch and the Seefeld Olympic Region.

Innsbruck

Tyrol’s capital city is definitely worth a visit – preferably with the “S-Bahn” train from Seefeld: In just 30 minutes, you are right in the centre, a short walk from the pedestrian zone in the Maria-Theresien-Strasse as well as the historic old town of Innsbruck with the famous Golden Roof. But there is much more to discover: St. Jacob Cathedral, the Hofburg, St. Anna’s monument and the legendary Triumph gate are a real must-see on every visit to Innsbruck.

The funicular runs directly from the centre, near to the state theatre, past the Alpine Zoo and the “Hungerburg” up to Mt Seegrube, one of the most popular attractions of the locals – with magnificent views over the city to the Stubai Alps.

Maria-Theresien-Strasse offers various shopping areas, such as the Town Hall Gallery and Kaufhaus Tyrol. Lean back and relax in one of the many street cafes and enjoy the unique atmosphere of the capital of the Alps.

Porta Claudia on the border to Bavaria in Germany, also known as the gateway to Tyrol, is a former fortification dating back to the time of the Thirty Years’ War.
